Learning Disabilities
Eligible students with disabilities under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act are entitled to a free appropriate public education. The District will follow state and federal law and applicable rules and regulations in identifying, locating, evaluating, and educating students with disabilities.
Does my child qualify for an IEP or 504 Plan?
To qualify for special education services, a student needs to meet the eligibility requirements in one of 13 categories described in the Michigan Administrative Rules for Special Education.
Autism Spectrum Disorder
Cognitive Impairment
Deaf-Blindness
Deaf or Hard of Hearing
Early Childhood Development Delay
Emotional Impairment
Physical Impairment
Other Health Impairment
Severe Multiple Impairments
Specific Learning Disability
Speech and Language Impairment
Traumatic Brain Injury
Visual Impairment
The definition of disability under Section 504 is different. Often, if a child does not qualify for special education services, parents look into a 504 Plan.
A parent who believes their student is eligible for special education or accommodations due to a disability or suspected disability should contact: for Special Education, Karen Demeray at kdemeray@tuscolaisd.org; for 504, Kristine Krieger at kkrieger@reese.k12.mi.us.
